We emphasized staying back on the back leg, getting on plane early, and letting the ball travel so he can drive the ball to the opposite field with authority. Opposite-field power comes from balance, direction, and staying through the baseball.

Bay Area hitters ⚾️

Got some work in at Purissima with Grayson & Parker French a couple of days ago. Here we are with Grayson, talking about one thing that changes EVERYTHING in your swing: posture.

If your chest pulls up and off the ball or stands up early, you’ll usually get topspin and ground balls.

When your chest stays over your toes through trunk rotation, it’s much easier to elevate and create backspin with the same power.

Simple cue: rotate around your posture, don’t lose it.

As the college season draws closer, we’d like to give a huge BACKS shout out to Young Back Tanner Kern. I’ve had the privilege of coaching Tan since he was 13 and throughout high school. Great swing, even better kid.

Tanner is playing for the University of San Diego Toreros this spring. Expect him to make some noise.

A quick situational hitting game I play with my players.

Doing the job is the most important thing; you get 1 point for getting the job done. In this case, it’s runner on 2nd, nobody out so move him over to 3rd.

You get an extra point if you do the job AND the runner gets an extra base.

And finally, you get another extra point for each extra base you get as the batter!

Hell of a weekend from 18u Squad as they go 4-1, win 4 in a row and go 3-0 on Sunday to secure NCTB’s Harvest Classic!

Huge weekends from team MVP Henry Little going 7-13 and catching 3 games and Tyler Manago compiling 7 hits as well.

The craziest stat being we had 4 straight CGs from Brennan Dooley, Lucas Sauceda, Moises Ledezma and Troy Quam, each dominating the game in their own way.

Overall, the whole squad competed every single pitch and we could not be more proud of them. It makes all the practices and hard work throughout the summer and fall worth it when you have a weekend like this.

Can’t wait to see these kids play for their high schools in the spring, and can’t wait for the next one! Go Backs 🦍

Huge Shoutout to Young Back Angelo Rivera. One of the OG Backs Squad, I’ve had the pleasure of coaching Ange since he was 11.

How this kid has came defensively cannot be stated.

One thing I think everyone can learn from this Young Man is the effort and work this kid has put in, is unmatched. Always grinding, always hustling.

His work ethic is what separates him from others and why he is continuing his journey at Westmont College in Santana Barbara.

Way to go Ange. So proud of you kid.

Shoutout to Young Back, Kai MacQuiddy for continuing his baseball career at Amherst College!

I’ve had the pleasure of Coaching Kai for 3.5 years now and the amount of growth this kid has had is so impressive.

Sitting 72-75 in his first bull pen, and being unable to “throw strikes”, to touching 89-90 his senior year with one of the nastiest sliders/offspeed pitches in the area.

His junior year, Kai would come and hit 2-3 times a week, most of the time after practices, and ended up batting over .500 for the season.

I can’t wait to see how this kid pitches this season, I know it’ll be one heck of a year. And safe to say that he will be missed around the Silverbacks community as his presence is undeniable.

Good luck Kai. Have fun this year.

Game 1 MVP goes to Young Back @troyq.10! Troy clutched up with a game tying RBI triple in the last inning and scored the winning run, 2 at bats later.

He also started the game, and went 2.1 innings with 6 Ks.

As the school year begins, we would like to pay homage to our graduating class of 2025, and to the players who have gone on to continue their baseball career at the next level.

Up first, we have KJ Rieden. I have had the pleasure of coaching KJ for the last 3 years, in travel ball and in high school. The amount of growth this kid has achieved is unmeasurable.

He became one heck on an infielder and emerged as the best hitter on our team last year, hitting nearly .500 and with a 1.452 OPS, leading us in RBIs and extra base hits.

As a pitcher, he went from sitting 72-75mph and touching 77 as a Sophmore, to sitting 88-90mph and touching 92 as a Senior.

I am so proud to see how much he has grown not only as a player, but as a young man and am very excited to see him tear it up at Westmont College this year.

Good luck KJ, we are all rooting for you!

Shoutout to Young Back Tyce Martinovic for absolutely crushing it today at the plate. Tyce busted the game open in the 2nd with a 1 out RBI Triple over the CFer’s head to put the Backs on the board with a 2-0 lead. This lead to a 6 run inning by the squad followed by a 11 RUN 3rd inning to end the game in 3 innings.

Young Back @anthonymessina_baseball with the CG, to secure the W in game 1. Ant had 10ks over 5 innings and only allowed 1 hit.

Heck of a game kid!

Young Back @kai_macquiddy came by to throw a bull pen on Monday. Typically, Kai sits 85-88mph, and even touched 90mph a few times this season, with his slider reaching over 3000rpm and sitting around 76-77mph.

His velo was slightly down today, but that’s COMPLETELY NORMAL. He’s been out of season for a couple months, enjoying his summer vacation before he heads to college, only throwing 3 times a week, compared to 5-6 times a week during the season.

Plus, there’s no batter in the box or game situation to get the adrenaline up. Games will typically add 3-4mph easy.

With that being said, the big focus has been his changeup and getting it to drop more with better control as well as adding in cutter.

The changeup was hellacious, coming out of his hand hot and then slowing down and dropping right as it reached the plate.

Cutter was not bad, but we need to get on top of it more to up the velo and get it to be little tighter.

If you want to hone in on your pitching skills, come throw bull pen with us and watch your velo and movement rise while staying healthy.

Winner of the 18u NCTB State Championship, your South Bay Silverbacks!

The Young Backs grinded it out on Sunday, going 3-0 after dropping a game yesterday and sneaking in to the Gold Bracket as the 5th seed.

That’s all the life they needed though. They rectified their one blemish in the championship game after a 10 inning nail biter and finished 4-1.

Tournament MVP goes to Young Back @zach_gallegos08 for some clutch hitting, including tying the game in the semis while down to our last out as well as a go ahead RBI knock in the chip and 5 2/3 great shutdown innings.

Honorable mentions go to @ethan_roth14 for throwing a CG shut out in 74 pitches in game 1 today and then coming back to close out the championship game with 3 shut down innings in extras (8, 9, 10)

As well as @andrewtraffas_ for tearing the cover off the ball and @lalloyd57 for catching all 3 games and being an absolute UNIT.

@kylepollace had a 3 run shot off of the scoreboard in the 6th. He had a single, a triple amd 4 RBIs

Dale Gurtler blew the game open in the 3rd with a 3 RBI bases clearing double. He had 2 hits and 3 RBIs.

Coach @_chasebandy_ also had 12 elbow guards and 4 shin guards held. A new career high in both categories.

Check out the slow-mo’s on the 3rd hit to see how she’s able to generate show much power to her opposite field. The bat is on plane, she is separated and her direction is impeccable. It’s almost as if Right Center/Right became her Centerfield on that swing.

The Barry Bonds/Gary Sheffield Drill. You DO NOT have to load like this! I don’t load like this. This is only a drill to get you feel something different.

The scap load/bat tip is over exaggerated but the idea is to get the bat to tip forward so as you swing it wants to tip backwards. Thus getting it to fall into the right slot so you can be on plane as you deliver it into the ball.

If want to do what the best do, hit me up. Anyone can learn it, and I’ve been able to teach it to most kids in ONE HOUR.

Young Back Akira Gok @akirabehindtheplate on an absolute tear to start the high school season! 🦍

In his first 5 games he’s hitting .500 with 3 2Bs and 1 3B and 7 RBIs.

When we started hitting in January, he could NOT go oppo with power and had no barrel depth in his swing. We made 4 or 5 adjustments to his swing but the biggest was connecting the bat to his trunk.

We’ve hit once a week for the past 6 weeks and he’s been killing it ever since. Notice how every single one of these hits, 4 of them being extra bases, are all oppo. He’s now driving the ball to right with power and he’s doing it over and over again.

Keep it up kid 👌

How well can you control the barrel? The 3rd pitch I could’ve pulled for another dong, but I forced it to right center by being late as heck and holding direction to right and still had a shot at it being a double.

When your swing is really good, you can hit the ball however you want to wherever you want. So while it’s dope hitting bombs like the 2nd swing, the 3rd swing approach will get you way more hits and a higher average.

We keep the streak rolling by honoring another Young Back. Huge shoutout to Mr. Daniel Lloyd for all of the hard work he has put in.

To see where this kid has come as a backstop is absolutely mind blowing.

Throughout most of his high school career coaches questioned his arm and his ability throw guys out on the bases.

The fall of 2023 this kid PUT THE WORK IN.

We threw what felt like everyday at the start of practice working on his mechanics and throwing motion to get him to throw harder.

By his last tournament with us, he threw 5-7 runners out (the first two steals were off of pitchers time to the plate) and the last 4 teams would send one guy, watch him get hosed and say “That’s enough steals for the day”

Last Sunday marked our first Sunday hosting the BACKS Games for 12u. I want to say a huge thank you to the @sjoaksbaseball and @cpknights for sending out their 13u and 12u teams. Another big thank you to @bestumpincali and @akira_1225_17 for umpiring and doing a great job

We had 7 HOME RUNS hit in total between the 3 teams as well as some great defensive and pitching displays.

As the summer comes to an end and the school year begins, we’re taking time to honor the Silverbacks who have advanced on to the next level.

Up first, Young Back Ellis Lubiens. An OB (original Back) Ellis was the first hitting lesson I ever gave back in 2018. He’s been with the program since we started in May of 2021, and it’s been incredible to see how much he’s grown as a player, leader and person.

Ellis will be moving on to play baseball at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz California. We’ll be keeping an eye out to see how he does this season.

Come out and join us for LIVE ABs Wednesday. Every Wednesday we give pitchers a chance to throw a 15-20 pitch bull pen and then 25 pitches to batters starting 1-1.

Hitters play a simulated game against each other and gives you opportunity to work on both sides of the ball.

Young Back @alexhandd9 showed some impressive movement and spin today at Live ABs Wednesday’s.

Alex’s velo is up consistently 6-8mph in a little over a month. His off speed picked up significant spin and speed just from learning better sequencing of his body.

For 15, this is a solid velocity jump. Velo jumps like this will come when pitchers understand how to sequence their lower half and upper half better.

We will look to get him into the low 80s come fall.

Last weekend’s player development clinic at Cupertino Little League was a success! A big thank you to @cupertinolittleleague for helping us host this event. The kids had a blast, learned some new skills and even coaches were able to learn new drills to do with their teams.

Also a big thank you to 7 of our players who selflessly spent their Sunday afternoons to help spread their love of baseball. That says a lot about our culture when high school juniors and seniors spend their day off to come help out young kids.

The kids were very appreciative and took note. One player even said “I wish every practice could be like this.” Which is one of the best things a coach can hear. I am privileged to be able to make baseball fun for kids and help grow their love for the game.

Come out tomorrow and get some swings in. The cage will be open. We will be filming the on field play in no fly zone and 2-ball.

No fly zone is a way we get a ton of live off the bat defensive fielding reps in a short amount of time, while hitters get to swing away at a live defense to try and beat them. The more balls that fall in, the more swings you get.

2-Ball is how we get guys at bats, train baserunning reads and get our defense confident in playing with guys running in their face.

9 and 10 year olds throwing gas! After a couple adjustments, all 4 pitchers picked up a couple MPH and threw strikes more consistently.
whats crazy is even as early into pitching as this age level of kids are, they’re are still so many natural similarities to elite pitchers. (ie; the freeze frames)

Most of the time, kids tend to have good movement patterns and our job as coaches is to differentiate between good and bad, then nudge them towards the good.

Coach’s Corner

Hi everyone,

My name is Coach Joey and thank you for visiting our site.
Any idea why I chose “Silverbacks” as our team logo? When I started coaching travel ball 8 years ago, I noticed at a younger age, the best teams are the ones with the biggest/most athletically developed kids. The kids who threw the hardest and hit the ball a mile with a -5 bat were the best and it wasn’t even close. I called it “Gorilla Baseball”. And if you’re going to hang with gorillas, you might as well be the Silverback.

When we started Silverbacks, we didn’t have the biggest or the most explosive kids. But we did have kids and a coaching staff who cared and worked hard at the game. As time went on, our undersized 11, 12, and 13 year olds honed their skills and baseball IQ, so that by the time they grew into their bodies at 16, 17, and 18 they could match their craftiness with newfound athleticism.

Our philosophy is teach the game and help foster their enjoyment for the game at 10-16u, so we can train and be at our best at 17 and 18.
